Moroccan Kaftan - A Versatile and Gorgeous Dress for Women
Moroccan kaftans are oversized garments with wide, loose sleeves. Moroccan kaftan dresses are fastened in the front with tiny buttons, usually made of silk braid, and look fashionable and chic. Due to their variations and designs, they have become one of the most trendy women's clothes. Moroccan kaftan dresses have undergone numerous transformations to become more appealing and stylish. Kaftan dresses are now worn regularly, but women also wear them for special events, parties, and weddings. Moroccan wedding kaftans are also popular for women who want to try new looks without sacrificing beauty and elegance.
History of Moroccan Kaftan Dress
The Moroccan caftan derives from the Persian heritage that Arab conquerors brought to North Africa. The Moroccan caftan is a cultural legacy from multiple civilizations in Morocco over the centuries. Moroccan, Berber, Arab, and Andalusian cultures have all been influenced by various other cultures. Moroccan caftans are worn by women in North Africa, including Morocco and Algeria, at home and for special occasions. In the Middle East, a caftan is the equivalent of an abaya dress.
Difference between a Moroccan Caftan and a Moroccan Takchita
Non-Moroccan and Moroccan kaftan designers frequently confuse Takchita, and because they do not know the difference between a Takchita and a caftan, they refer to all as Moroccan caftans. The truth is that Moroccan women and Moroccan cultural stylists distinguish between the two:
- Takchita: A two-piece dress made up of two layers: a Tahtiya (a simple traditional caftan without ornaments) and a Fouqia or dfina (a caftan often open and transparent with many beautiful embroideries and embellishments). A Takchita is typically worn with a Mdamma (belt) made of silk, gold, or silver embellished with gems (diamond, ruby, sapphire, and emerald).
- Caftan: A one-piece dress typically worn without Mdamma (belt).
The popularity of the Moroccan Kaftan Dress
The Moroccan caftan was not known worldwide until the 1990s. Since then, its popularity has increased as a result of:
- Moroccan diaspora: Approximately 4.5 million individuals have Moroccan heritage or are Moroccan citizens residing outside of Morocco. The Moroccan caftan was brought to Western countries by these emigrants.
- Fashion: Throughout the world, many shows and fashion shows have introduced the Moroccan caftan and Takchita as the central theme of the night.
- Stylists and designers: Yves Saint Laurent, Kenzo, JP Gautier, and Christian Lacroix were among the first haute couture designers to include the Moroccan kaftan and Takchita in their collections.
- The Moroccan Royal Family: The Moroccan royal family is very proud of the kaftan and Takchita, especially at international events where cameras are present. Most Moroccans consider Moroccan Princess Lalla Salma the shining star of the royal family, representing Moroccan Caftan culture worldwide.
