Stunning Ikat Sarees to Look Beautiful In
Sarees being such an essential part of an Indian woman’s wardrobe has made them an indispensable symbol of Indian culture worldwide. Ikat sarees are one of the most popular and renowned, forever immortal because of their beauty and elegance. A traditional twist on the basic tie and dye process, the Ikat saree is a beautiful woven tale, flowing from Odisha to Telangana, Andhra Pradesh to Gujarat.
Technique of Making Ikat Sarees
By resist-dying the strands before the fabric are woven, patterns can be created in fabric dating back thousands of years. The method was improved at many phases to create intricate, mottled patterns. All the bindings are removed, and the threads are then woven into cloth once the craftspeople are pleased with the dye. This elaborate technique leads to a sort of 'blurry’ design, characteristic of these Ikat sarees. However, it is possible to have little to no blurring in the elaborate designs, though that is a lengthy and labour-intensive process. Hence, those designs are way costlier than the normal ‘blurry’ ones.
Before weaving the cloth, Ikat is created by resisting colouring portions of the yarns. In Ikat, the resist is created by tightly wrapping individual skeins or bundles of yarn in the pattern required. Ikat fabric has a surface pattern on both faces; thanks to the yarn binding, the pattern remains consistent from one side to the other. Ikat weaving comes in three main varieties, which are as follows:
Weft Ikat -
In this type, the weft is dyed while the warp is a solid color.Warp Ikat -
In this type, the warp has a dyed pattern, while the weft is a solid color.Double Ikat -
Before weaving, the warp and weft are both coloured, and their cross sections are where the pattern is created. Due to its complexity and intensity, it takes more time and demands advanced talent.
Pochampally Ikat
This style originated in the Indian state of Telangana. This double Ikat weave is recognised for its elaborate and symmetrical natural dye designs and the superior silk fabric used to create them.
Sambalpuri Ikat
It is also known as a bandha in Odisha. The designs frequently feature animal themes and curvilinear patterns, and the yarns used are fine. In this design, the weft yarns are placed in the loom after the tie-dyed yarns have been organized in a pattern. This extremely old style of ikat is also used in Indonesia to make ikat fabrics.
Popular Motifs and Designs
The three motifs that make up this weave's primary components are abstract, environmental, and geometric. Additionally, each of these categories draws influence from various sources, including its geographic origin, local population, and natural surroundings. Geometric motifs consist of stripes, checks, chevron, and diamond patterns; abstract motifs are made up of hazy waves and lines in various colors; and environmental motifs are patterns that are inspired by nature, fauna, and commonplace occurrences.
