Mangalsutra, meaning "holy thread" in Sanskrit, is an auspicious holy necklace worn by married women in India. It is typically made of gold or silver and has a pendant in the form of a mangalsutra (a sacred knot). The traditional designs of the mangalsutra have deep symbolic meaning and are steeped in religious tradition. The most common design is the two-stranded sacred knot, which symbolizes the union of husband and wife. The knot also represents their eternal bond and the never-ending love they share.
Mangalsutras come in various styles to suit personal preferences. Traditionalists favor plain gold mangalsutras, a timeless choice reflecting cultural values. Meanwhile, those seeking a modern twist opt for trendy diamond mangalsutras, which blend tradition with contemporary aesthetics. The diversity of designs, incorporating gemstones and unique metals, allows couples to express their unique bond and individual styles. Ultimately, the best mangalsutra is one that resonates with your love story and personal taste.
The Maharashtrian mangalsutra is special. It has a black beaded chain with two gold bowl-shaped vati pieces. These gold pieces stand for the husband and wife, like Shiva and Shakti. The black beads are there to keep away bad things and protect the marriage. There are two kinds of black beads called "Nirgun" and "Shagun." Sometimes, all the beads are black, or there's a pattern of nine black beads and two gold ones. This mangalsutra is not just jewelry – it's about love and keeping the marriage safe.
At Telugu weddings, the mangalsutra is an iconic element. Comprised of two round discs like coins representing each family - one coming from the groom's and the other bride's families respectively - tied together with yellow thread, it can be tied around the wife's neck with three knots during weddings. After sixteen days the two discs will be joined with black and coral beads on gold chains so that they do not bump against each other; this symbolizes how their respective families have come together. Furthermore, people can customize it further by adding diamonds, gemstones or changing its style whilst remaining visible to others.
The Tamil mangalsutra, commonly referred to as a thaali, is of great symbolic meaning in Hindu marriages, just as wedding bands symbolize commitment and unity. "Mangala Dharanam" marks the moment when the groom places the thaali on his bride. Named variously as thirumangalayam, Mangalyam, Thaaly, and Kodi amongst others, the thaali can take many shapes and styles that reflect mythology and family traditions. Embed symbols on it to represent family deities, Tulsi plant, Lord Shiva, or Goddess Meenakshi that carry special significance for them - symbols which contain great significance when placed onto its surface. Families may add additional gold coins, diamonds, or gems to make it even more beautiful. At Tamil weddings, thaalis are worn on a gold chain known as "Manja Kayiru." At first, a yellow thread may be used during ceremonies before becoming replaced with either a gold chain or mangalsutra chain with black beads known as "Nallapusalu."
In North India, Mangalsutras have their own style. They're usually made of plain gold and hang on a chain of black beads.
In Bihar, the bride wears a special mangalsutra called 'Taagpaag.' This mangalsutra typically features a curved pendant with various designs, and it's hung on a black beaded gold chain. Furthermore, in Bihari culture, a toe ring called 'Bichwa' is an important part of bridal jewelry.
But some communities like the Marwaris and Gujaratis prefer Mangalsutras with diamonds. Others are catching onto this trend because diamonds look nice on them.
Modern mangalsutras come in many fancy designs for different tastes. Here are some examples:
